Stained Glass or Window Film? Choose for Your Window

If you are choosing between stained glass window film and a handmade glass hanging, start with what you want the window to do. Do you want to cover part of the pane, or enjoy a separate piece of art? My work is made from real glass. A small hanging adds a focal point while leaving the rest of the window open.

A surface covering or a separate artwork?

Decorative window film sits on the existing pane. Depending on the product, it uses adhesive or static cling and may be cut to cover a larger area. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the exact film and glazing.

My stained glass ornaments hang in front of a window or, where the product description allows it, against a wall. The glass has its own outline, edges and joins. It needs a secure attachment and room around it; it is not applied as a sheet over the pane.

Choose by the job you need it to do

• More privacy: look for a covering with stated privacy performance. My small ornaments leave space around the glass and are not privacy screens.
• A handmade object to keep: choose a glass hanging for its shape, material and color. You can choose a new display position later, provided the support is suitable.
• A pattern across a whole pane: compare films designed for that purpose, or discuss a separate custom glass project with me. A small ornament will not give the same coverage.
• A gift: a separate piece avoids choosing a film cut to someone else's window. You still need to check that they have a safe place to hang glass.

Try a paper outline before choosing real glass

For a square accent, SUNNY measures 10 × 10 cm, about 3.94 × 3.94 inches. It is assembled with traditional lead came and comes with a 50 cm satin cord. The cord length is separate from the glass size.

For a narrower outline, SPARKLE comes in small at 10 × 6 cm (about 3.94 × 2.36 inches) and medium at 14 × 10 cm (about 5.51 × 3.94 inches). It also comes with a 50 cm satin cord. Use a paper shape of the glass dimensions to see how much view remains around it, then allow for the planned hanging drop.

If you rent your home

A hanging piece does not replace the window, but that does not make every fixing suitable for a rental. Check your permitted fixings and the support needed for the exact artwork. Do not assume a suction cup, adhesive hook or curtain rod can carry it. Keep the piece clear of opening windows and blinds. My hanging guide covers those checks.

Questions before buying

Will a suncatcher stop people looking through the window?

I do not sell my small hanging pieces as privacy glazing. If privacy is essential, plan a suitable covering separately.

Does stained glass replace insulation or solar-control film?

No such performance is claimed for my decorative hangings. Choose those functions using the specifications of a product intended for them.

Can I order a piece for a particular window?
