How to Choose Stained Glass Window Art
Stained glass changes with the light behind it. To choose a piece for your home, start with the available space, the shape you like and how the artwork will hang.
Compare shape and size before choosing a color
Start with the clear space available, not the size of the whole window. These examples compare a narrow ornament, a flower, a square tile and a longer composition. Follow each link to see photographs, colors and current availability.

Inch measurements are approximate. The ornament measurements and a garland’s total length describe different things; check the selected product before ordering.
Separate glass size from hanging length
Measurements do not all describe the same thing. A diameter may describe one element in a garland, while total length describes the full composition. Where a product includes a 50 cm cord, that cord is approximately 19.69 inches long and is separate from the glass dimensions.
Measure the intended display area and allow room for the hanging arrangement. If a measurement is unclear, contact Claire before ordering.
A quick measuring checklist
- Measure the unobstructed width and height with curtains and blinds in their usual positions.
- Allow clearance for an opening window and the full hanging arrangement, not only the glass.
- Hold a paper outline of the proposed size in the display area to compare proportions.
- If you rent, check permitted fixings before choosing the mounting method.

Think about the light and background
Consider how the colors look against your window, curtains or wall, and how the light changes during the day. Choose a shape and palette you enjoy even when there is less light behind the glass. Handmade texture and color can vary slightly between pieces.
Plan how the artwork will hang
Read the product's display information to see whether it comes with cord, transparent wire or eyelets. Choose a suitable, secure attachment for the item and the surface. If you are unsure about mounting or a particular location, ask Claire for advice before installing it.
For outdoor, architectural or unusually exposed locations, discuss suitability with Claire instead of assuming that a decorative hanging piece is intended for that use.
